Stays of Eleonora de Toledo, 1562

"Funeral stays of Eleonora of Toledo, 1562, Florence, Galleria del Costume.

The function of the velvet stays appears to have been that of keeping warm , rather than providing stiffness, for which the cardboard sections inserted into the bodice of the petticoat or gown were sufficient."
